WISE — The latest fruits of a three-year investigation by the Southwest Virginia Drug Task Force resulted in indictments against 31 individuals who were the subject of a mass arrest in the Big Stone Gap and Appalachia areas on Wednesday.

Law enforcement officers with the Wise County Sheriff’s Department and town police departments combined to conduct the mass arrest of the individuals indicted by the multi-jurisdictional grand jury on various drug-related offenses.

Since 2005, more than 450 arrests on drug charges have resulted from what officials have previously dubbed the “Street Sweeper” anti-narcotics effort in Wise County following ongoing probes by the task force.

Wise County Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Suzanne Kerney-Quillen said the latest investigation and roundup of those indicted by the grand jury revealed an increasing number of cases involving distribution of buprenorphine, a generic name for Suboxone.

Kerney-Quillen said Suboxone is of considerable concern to the task force because it is a medication marketed to treat people with opioid dependencies.

Twelve of the 31 individuals targeted in Wednesday’s mass arrest are charged with distribution of buprenorphine.

“We are lucky to have law enforcement agencies in Wise County that work so well together,” said Wise County Commonwealth’s Attorney Ron Elkins. “A three-year investigation takes a lot of time, manpower, teamwork and dedication. I appreciate all their efforts.”

Nearly two dozen of the 31 suspects indicted by the grand jury were under arrest by 2 p.m. Wednesday. Those arrested and their charges include:
